Illustrator Research #29- Gary Alphonso

Website

Gary Alphonso is a Toronto based freelance illustrator. He graduated from the Sheridan College illustration program in 1982, and then continued his studies at the Ontario College of Art and Design. Inspired by early 20th century wood engraving, he prefers scratchboard as his medium.  He also combines this with digital media.

His commissions have ranged from advertising to editorial and book publishing. He also has received various awards from Applied Arts, Studio Magazine, CAPIC and 3x3 Magazine.

Seeing another scratchboard artist like this really makes me want to work with it again.  Gary Alphonso's work has beautiful amounts of contrast and carefulness to detail, and his digital application really works well with the contrast scratchboard creates.
